SOLD Cue #40809 "Balabushka" Weight: oz. Shafts: mm Ferrules Description: George Balabushka cue with an interesting history. Restored circa: 1994 by Tim Scruggs. As the story goes, A great player from New England named Larry Liscotti who recently died, many years ago reportedly beat Steve Mizerak out of the cue playing 3 cushion billiards. There are probably some rail birds out there that would remember watching the match . I believe the cue to be a rare Gus Szamboti blank, because of the type of window treatment in the butt sleeve of the cue; a treatment done late in Balabushka's career when Most of the blanks being used, were those made by Gus. I spoke to Larry Liscotti on more than one occasion about buying this cue, but it was always in hock ( Being held as collateral v/s a loan ) Liscotti in debt at that time, had borrowed a large sum of money against the cue, Larry never seemed able to come up with enough money to get it back. Now that Larry Liscotti died, the owner contacted me about selling the cue for him.

Fully restored to like new in "1966" by Pete Tascarella who was Balabuska's friend and Quasi-apprentice. The cue has a total of ( 4 ) shafts. They are: 2-Original Balabushka 28.5" shafts 12.95mm & 13.03mm and 2-Tascarella 28.75" shafts, 13.13mm & 13.33mm all with Ivory Ferrules. .There is a letter of authenticity from Pete Tascarella that comes with the cue. Note: The only trade-in the owner might consider is a plain variety 4-pt. Gus Szamboti cue.

The long points also have ivory jacks with dots inside the jacks and a small ivory dot just above the jacks. Between the windows, are 2 maple diamonds with ebony inside with a small maple line in-between them vertically. Curved maple lines left and right are in the center of the diamonds and the standard "Southwest" short black butt cap has 6 rings touching above it: Thin ebony / thin maple / wider maple ring with black-white-black vertical slots separating it into 1/2" wide sections / thin black / and lastly thin maple. Description: The cue was identified by Barry Szamboti March, 2003 at the Allen Hopkins Expo and also several years back, I had sent the cue to Barry myself to be sure it was one his dad made.
Barry Szamboti said the piloted ivory joint and ivory butt cap were his dad's, but that he feels the rest of the ivory diamonds, dots and spears were added by some other cue maker at some later date. The inlay work although well done, did not seem to be that of his father.
Length: 59". It is very rare indeed to find a piloted ivory joint Gus Szamboti cue of any kind and ever rarer to find one that has a Gus Szamboti ivory butt cap. The cue currently has Ivory rectangles, spears and dots added to the ebony butt sleeve and an ivory spear added to each point. It is not known who added the ivory inlays; but Barry Szamboti did not think they were added by his dad. Description: I recently discussed this cue with Barry Szamboti, and he thought it to be the only one of this design to have been made. The cue was professionally restored in "1999" and a new leather wrap put on it. It has two original shafts that are heavily played, as the pictures depict.
It was originally made for Mr. Barry Bettencort a billiard room owner in California, who has since passed away. He also had purchased other cues from Gus over the years, including an 8-pt. Gus Szamboti, which I already sold previously to a collector who does not want to re-sell it.
